A few weeks ago I wrote a blog post about my friend who discovered she had breast cancer at the age of 40, with 3 kids in tow. This is just a follow up post to what happened a few days after that.
Instead of feeling bad for herself, my friend wanted to do something fun for her and her kids in the face of her disease. As we all know chemotherapy makes most people lose their hair. Instead of dwelling on this, Holly decided to get down to business and have a no tears head shaving party. (no crying allowed) I can tell you I had mixed feelings about this, but it sounded way more fun than waiting for your hair to fall out on its own.
She gathered her family and closest friends and went down to the local salon after it closed. I thought it would be fun to snap some before and after pics of each stage of the shaving. This was not going to be a simple ‘get out the clippers and take it all off’ situation, noooo. If you are going to lose your hair, you might as well go with as many hair styles as possible before you get down to the bare noggin.
She got the asymmetrical bob, the Miley Cyrus rock and roll half head shave, the multicoloured Mohawk and then the army cut. Needless to say there were plenty of giggles and laughs all around. At the end she topped it all off with her newly donated wig which she gave the moniker ‘Lola’. I’ve since seen she also has another wig named ‘Betty’. It’s a short 50 ‘s style bob and it looks fabulous!
Let’s face it, Cancer is no fun whichever way you dice it, but fighting through with as many uplifting moments as one can muster, can only help the fight. My friend is in round two of her chemo treatments now and is doing well. That little bit of fuzz left on the top of her head is now somewhere down the sink drain and no doubt scattered across the house, but what gives her the warm and fuzzies now-a-days is the love surrounding her from friends and family. Hair or no hair, these are the people keeping her head and her heart warm.
A few family pics to start. I gave Holly’s dad the camera to snap a few pics of her and I….nice work! The new bob. Shaved on the sides, volume on the top. Rock and Roll! Punk is alive and well in Arnprior Fashionista Introducing ‘Lola’ Good-Bye hair. Salon: The beauty Boutique and Day Spa, Arnprior
