Creating a Wedding Cake with Sugar House Cakes and Stacey Stewart Photography

I’m back to tell you about another great local business in the North Gower/Kemptville area. This time I was on the hunt for a local wedding cake designer and I found Tanya Mercer owner of Sugar House Cakes in North Gower.  I met Tanya a few months ago when I was highlighting Julia O’Grady from In The Moment Party and Event Planning. She was supplying a gorgeous cake at the wedding venue I was covering for Julia. I was happy to find out she was from the area and is working toward her goal of eventually giving up her “day job” and strictly creating tasty confections.

Tanya has been decorating cakes out of her home for seven years now. She has always loved baking and cooking, and when her mom secretly signed her up for a cake decorating course all those years ago Tanya decided to try it and hasn’t looked back.

“When you enjoy creating, your passion shows through, you persevere, becoming better at honing your skill.”

Her hard work and love of decorating cakes was apparent to friends and family also. Like most small businesses of a creative nature, word of mouth takes hold and suddenly people are asking you to create for them. Tanya started getting requests from friends, family and eventually strangers to make creative cakes and baked goods for various occasions. Sugar House Cakes was suddenly born.

Every cake Tanya produces is custom made right from scratch. I asked her what were some of her signature flavours,  my mouth watered as she rattled off this list: Strawberry pink champagne with strawberry buttercream icing (OMG), Lemon poppy seed and THEN pumpkin spice with either maple or caramel cream cheese icing. Of course she mentioned chocolate and vanilla were still the most requested and she does do an egg free and dairy free chocolate too.

Decorating wedding cakes is what Tanya really enjoys. They produce a particular challenge and attention to detail is paramount.

I always wondered why wedding cakes were so expensive it’s just cake right? Wrong. Every cake is lovingly made from scratch then Tanya can spend anywhere from 5 to 15 hours depending on the details decorating. It not only has to taste phenomenal, but it has to look that way too. Cakes can also be fickle according to the weather.  Some of the delicate icings will not hold up to warm weather, this becomes part of the decision making when Tanya recommends a cake for a particular function. Staying with current trends is also something Sugar House Cakes strives to acheive.

Sugar House Cakes can create delicious confections for all occasions: Birthdays, Weddings, Baptisms, Holidays, Parties and even cakes for your dogs birthday. Yup…your dogs birthday. She usually whips up a cake made with sweet potato and peanut butter for our little K9 friends and they love it!

Give Sugar house cakes a call right now, she is baking up some delicious treats for the Christmas holidays….cupcakes, cookies, cakes, cake pops, pies and likely just about any sweet treats your heart desires.

She is accepting orders for next years wedding cakes and all other occasions can be booked within a few days notice.
